Language Barriers [09 Jan 2006|01:09pm]
[ mood | blank ]

Today was my first classes: stats, bio and co-op. I think I may have quite a bit of work this semester. If it was anything like last semester, it will be fun and educational.

My friend told me that if I put money on the "Retail Club Plan" I could buy stuff with my card and get a 10% discount at the bookstore.

I decided that there must be catch so I went over to the building and asked the secratary a few questions.

me: I have a few questions about the retail club plan. How is it that I can save 10% on my purchases?
sec: Well, if you put $100 on the card then go to the bookstore and buy a $90 book, you will get $9 back.
me: Ok....So how is it possible that I am able to save this money?
sec: Let's say you buy something for $50. You will get a $5 refund on that purchase.
me: Ok. But how is that possible?
sec: Well the retail club plan is good for students who don't have much money or only want to spend-
me (interrupting): How does the bookstore make up for the lost profit?
sec: Oh, I don't really know.

Frustrating...very much so.

Today I will hang out with Enri and tomorrow I will go to square one to buy presents....At least I'm not wasting my time off.

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

In June I had a shoot-out with rival gang lords on the 5 near LA (-76 points). In July I committed genocide... Sorry about that, chibi_lina (-5000 points). In September on a flight to Pakistan, I stole the emergency flight information card (-40 points). Last Friday I gave syren_ a kidney (1000 points). Last week I broke smfmvangogh's X-Box (-12 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-4128 points). For Christmas I deserve a spanking!

Write your letter to Santa! Enter your LJ username:

Hehehehe this is an awesome score.

Anyway, studying for chem is getting on my nerves. I have therefore made an executive decision to take a break for my own personal sanity.

What a lovely friday [26 Nov 2005|10:44am]
[ mood | relaxed ]

So I went to see Goblet of Fire because Devin wouldn't watch it alone (he would probably appear to be a pedophile had he shown up alone). It was a good movie with lots of human drama. Suffice to say I liked it.

After we got back we had some dinner and there was a chance encounter with me friends Justin, Thahn and Steve. They were going to a party and I thought it out:

Aside from those people, nobody is awake
games on my computer

I made a decision and carried it through. The party was alright for having people I didn't know. I thought, "hey, I'll never see these people again so why don't I just meet them and be social?"

This social thing is kinda cool. I talked to a few people and then we (Steve, Thahn, Devin, Justin and I) went back to justin's room where I saw a gigantic anime collection that I will soon annex.

We tried to get Steve drunk but it was no good (damn cautious people). My drunk-people-humiliating-themselves urge was quenched however when some guy showed at the door completely plastered and Thahn was trying to make him catch a ball.

Then came the real fun. Justin has a large collection of plastic guns that shoot little rubber bullets (not painful, they are toys). We split into teams and tried to 'kill' all of the other guys. This lasted until about 3:30 in the morning.

I would say that has been one of the best Fridays on campus.

During this whole thing I had a raspy voice from some sort of cold/fever/food poisoning/botched assassination attempt and I had tried various things. Vodka doesn't really help, it just burns the mucus layer away...oh well I'll try something more potent...like HCl

Well that's it. All that is left now is a nutrition quiz and a chem quiz then exams (I need to get 80's on most of these things to get into coop...ugh)

Out of the loop [10 Nov 2005|09:19pm]
[ mood | indifferent ]

what happens to a young, bright, handsome and helpful guy when he moves into university? I don't know but I know what happens to me.

I found out that my grandmother is being moved into an old age home on friday. They had made the decision on tuesday and assumed Kathleen would tell me......

Its really a shame that this must happen - but there is no avoiding it. This would be in her best interest (she was happy about it when they told her).

It was good to talk to my parents though. Despite the joys of living on campus, one does tend to get homesick occasionally. I can't wait for the winter concert at carmel. It is going to be fun to watch the concert again like I did before high school.

What exactly does a university student do anyway? [09 Nov 2005|03:38pm]
"If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, even if we don't speak often, please post a comment with a memory of you and me. It can be anything you want- good or bad. When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or moritified) about what people remember about you."

I seem to have good luck in terms of purchasing foodstuffs. I got myself 8 pounds of apples for $2 while grocery shopping on saturday. Apparently, my mom didn't believe kathleen when she told them and my dad shoke his head and walked away. The good news is that none of them are going to waste (I'm starting to enjoy fruit now more than chocolate - there is no bad aftertaste and it isn't as bad for you).

I found out that I have another math term test on thursday which I am about to study like mad for. This one should be a lot easier as it it is all about derivatives, log rules and series/sequences.

I've also noticed that I don't do anything while I'm at university. I go to lectures, I get close to falling asleep during those lectures, then I go to my room and either play maple story or do lab work. Of course, there are parties to which I could attend...but I never felt like the kind of person who does parties.

All work and no play it seems. That doesn't matter though. I still do all of my nerdy things (kicked two kids in magic over the weekend - one had been playing since he was 5 if that means anything).

So I am going to run over to the poster sale and pick up a ministry of silly walks poster for my room. cheerio

ps. if you dont know of the silly walk thing - tell me and ill send you the file

Nothing says family like mail [01 Nov 2005|01:49pm]
I received my first parcel from my family today. It was a duct-taped clad box that took nearly forever to open. After removing the layers of paper and tape I came across a brown box.

"Interdental Cleaners - 100 Packets"

Those jerks, I thought. The nerve of some family members to send me dental care products.

I opened it and found a mountain of chocolate. Immediately, I retracted my last statement and read the note.

My dear family had sent me a halloween care package. It was so wonderful. :p.

Family is a certifiably odd thing. They ask so much of you when you are there and they always find a fault with you. But the second you leave, its all rainbows and lollypops. I guess this is what family is really about.

The succulent taste of meat [25 Oct 2005|11:05am]
[ mood | calm ]

Dryest chicken ever.
I spend a week eating plants and bread and I am rewarded with not only nothing, but a very dry nothing. The vegetables I put on the chicken burger tasted better than that sorry excuse for poultry!

But I had a dessert crepe later on in the night and that was good (except they messed up my order and placed the wrong filling). Oh well.

Philosophy midterm tonight. I am basically wasting my time right now, partly because I really don't want to do any work (my motivation is waning). Well, I guess I'll try to study then.

Till the next post

Canadian theatre is awesome [23 Oct 2005|12:57am]

First off, my chem midterm went very well. After twelve hours of intense studying, I believe I pulled it off.

Now then, today Mike and I went to go see "Fully commited" so that we could review the play for the Ontarion (our school newspaper). This was the funniest thing I have every seen. The one-act play is about a struggling actor who works as a receptionist for a restaurant.

In addition to being a one act play, the play also has only one actor (the man who plays ranger gord on the red green show).

It was impressive, he managed over forty different voices by himself and each took on a personality of its own.

Unfortunately it was the last showing of the play. poop. I would've taken Christina to see it again if it kept going.

Midterm studying (aka how to get an ulcer) [21 Oct 2005|08:44am]
[ mood | apprehensive ]

So my chem midterm is at hand. I have about 24 hours now to prepare for it, 8 hours are attributed to sleep so that I don't lose consciousness during the test. I have only a few topics that I need to study (Equillibrium, stoichiometry and everything inside those subjects). Overall, I hope I do well. This thing is worth 25% of my final chem mark so I should be really focusing on working.

Unfortunately, today is D&D. I wont be stupid and go to it, however. I have my priorities. Attempting to roll a twenty will not get me any closer to graduating.

IT'S ON!!!!!!!! [17 Oct 2005|11:46pm]
[ mood | Giggity Giggity! ]

That's right Billy, I'm Back and I want YOU!
...right... So I am posting again. Such a long wait, eh?

Well, This is what's going down: I told my friend that I could go for a week as a vegetarian on campus. Starting this morning I began my journey.

Now I must emphasize that my definition of vegetarian is one who does not eat dead or alive animals. Animal products (dairy, namely) are ok because nothing gets killed in the process.

I came to a dilemma at supper time, I was about to ask for mayonaise on my sub when I realised it possessed eggs.
My friend argued that mayonaise was not meat because eggs are only single cells. Well, the biology half of me kicked in and I tried to explain that any animal cell is still an animal.

Seeing as it was a veggie sub I got ceasar instead. To my knowledge, the ceaser they use is vegetarian (Though I am not sure, I will feign ignorance in this situation).

As it stands, I think I may not go crazy from meat withdrawal.

Good luck on midterms everyone. To the people in highschool: you can have fun getting into university so that you can feel special too and get an ulcer from the resulting studying :P

MY SAMPLE!!!!!! ARRGGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!! [22 Sep 2005|11:30am]
[ mood | NOOOOOOOOO ]

Yesterday was my first chemistry lab. That was the most fun in school I had. Really, university labs are better than high school labs by far. Partly because the university has up to date materials and imporvisation isn't required.

It was about 2 hours into my lab and I was nearly finished. I was removing the copper(I) I made from the drying oven when I knocked it slightly and part of my sample fell off of the filter paper.

Well I was pissed. I couldn't scoop the sample back up because it was at the bottom of an oven. So this is how I tried to save the entire lab.

I weighed what I had left
I approximated how much copper had fallen off (which was less than half) and made the remaining sample about that much.
I weighed the "equivalent of the missing copper" and added to what I actually had left.
If my approximation is correct, I should be able to do well.

After all of that happened, I went to the chess club where I met up with some of my friends. We hung out and talked with a 4th year until 2:30 in the morning. The 4th year didn't live on residence and iif he were to drive home, he would just have to drive back in 5 hours. So he slept in Mike's room and all was good.

I woke up at 8:27 today because I was up so late. My math lecture starts at 8:30.

So, I was in just a little bit of a rush. I got there and had only missed a few minutes. Afterwards, I tried to do some research with my bio term report partner but we couldn't think of any good subjects.

What happens when I wake up [16 Sep 2005|04:33pm]
[ mood | mellow ]

Last night I finished my philosophy course and went back to my room. At 11:00pm I heard a knock and my friend, Mike's voice. I got up and went to the door. Mike was there with Devin. I closed the door, found some pants and put on my shoes.

Now, I may have to tell you that I am very delierious If I am woken up sometimes.

They told me it was 11:00am so I looked out the window. They told me that the apocalypse happened. Honestly, in my mental state, it made sense. I woke up slightly and realized they were joking.

So they told me they were going to the observatory to go stargazing. I was already awake so I went with it.

We got to the bus stop and the bus showed up. They were joking and they wanted to see if I would believe it. (There is an observatory in Guelph...somewhere...). They really needed me to walk with Devin back to his Rez and back with Mike (buddy system which is strongly recommended on campus).

That was my night. It wasn't so bad and it was all in good humour. I hope you all get the same quality of sleep as me. :D

The first days of University [13 Sep 2005|08:07pm]
[ mood | content ]

Let me start by flaunting my schedule in the faces of the populus (known hereafter as y'all). On Monday, wednesday and Friday my classes start at 11:30 and end at 3:30. On Tuesday and Thursday, my first class is at 8:30-9:30 and my second class is at 7:00-9:00pm. I have tons of time to do my work and even get ahead in class. My physics class is also awesome with its 30 person class size.

Muwahaha. Philosophy is easy too. I have 2 assignments, an essay, midterm and final to worry about. Physics is even better. Let me detail how friggen easy it is.

I have 3 chances to write a quiz. If I get 8/10, it counts as 100%. If I fail 3 times (7.5 and below) I get a 6/10.

Tell me if this is somewhat unbalanced. I can get 1/10 on all three tries and pass with 6/10. (I love this course)

The work is a bit overwhelming though. I have to go through 4 chapters of chem, 2 chapters of bio and 2 chapters of philosophy by friday. But, when factored in with all of my free time, It isn't so stressful.

School is about to start [08 Sep 2005|11:23pm]
[ mood | cheerful ]

I have done so much this week. As well as getting/winning a lot of free stuff I have also been able to start the process of getting ready for classes. I will be attending my first classes tomorrow though they are only orientation classes.

After that, I managed to get a ticket for a paintball game. 100 rounds, equipment and about three hours fo ten dollars is one of the greatest prices I have encountered.

Saturday is a tour of downtown Guelph and Sunday is the final day before classes start.

The first day... [05 Sep 2005|08:51am]
[ mood | amused ]

I woke up on sunday around 6:00. I wasn't able to sleep because I was very anxious. This combination resulted in me being a bit slow on the draw so-to-speak. We left for Guelph at 8:30 and arrived at 9. The wait in line to move in was pretty short (maybe half an hour or so).

After I had all my stuff moved up I set up the fridge, printer and laptop (the neccessities of life) and my family (minus Kathleen who was at the Renn Fest) went out for lunch.
We found some place in downtown Guelph Called Diana's and enjoyed ourselves. Afterwards, we walked over and found an antique shop. There were some pretty cool things in there.
We then went grocery shopping and I was returned to my res to fend for myself.

As soon as I settle down in my room, a meeting for all of my section was called. It was a general mixer meeting and I met some of my floormates and some people above and below me. We then did some Ice-Breaker games to familiarize ourselves with each other. Then came the Maritime Hall (my residence) barbeque and boogie practice.

Now you are probably all sitting there asking: What the hell is a boogie?

A boogie is a choreographed dance of every member of a residence. During the pep rally that went from 8 to 11 we competed with other halls for the coveted prize of....

...a painting.

Maritime didn't win. That's ok. I think the best boogie was the Nintendo themed one from oneof the North Residences. They had a Mario, Link, Goomba and a multitude of Tetris cubes. And the music was all 8-bit!

So I got back to my dorm at 12 and was trying to get settled in again when I was asked by some people to go get free ice cream with them at the UC (university centre). After that it was about 1 and I again tried to settle in. Again, some people ran by and got us all downstairs for an impromtu party. It consisted of some Daft Punk, Led Zepplin and two guys drinking. I left shortly after I viewed one guy's dorm (it was a triple made into a double!)

This morning I went over for some free pancakes and was lucky that I was early. I would not have gotten any If I wasn't.
I must now go for the record-breaking challenge of the largest game of duck duck goose.

What an ordeal [31 Aug 2005|12:15am]
[ mood | tired ]

I woke up today intent on getting my g1. I called Christina so I could have company down to oakville but she was still asleep and I wanted to have a large buffer of time before the place closes. I left on the 48 to clarkson and studied my book along the way. Once there, I found out that the bus I wanted to get on doesn't run on tuesdays. I wandered around the station for at least half an hour trying to decide what to do (go home or press on, somehow). During that time I considered jumping over the walkway bridge and exploring the creek-like runoff system that ran beneath the railway, I didn't want to look like an idiot with no friends around so I decided to wait for another opportuinity I talked to the GO ticketmaster and he said that there was definitely a bus that went past what I amlooking for. Sure enough, the 21 took me there. The only problem was that it took half an hour to arrive at the station and another 20mins to weav its way through a bunch of housing streets.

Once there I went in and found that I had forgotten I needed my birth certificate. Yeah, this is where I got frustrated too. I got hungry almost immediately after this occurance and went to Sobey's for a sandwich. Though tasty, it wasn't so good in the long run. I doubt I will get their food again. Afterwards I attempted to coerice the nice lady into letting me take the test without my birth certificate to no avail. I left a message in vain to my mother in hopes she could deliver said certificate and make all the trouble seem worthwhile.

Shortly after leaving the second message, I went home. While getting on the bus back to clarkson one passenger was short by 25 cents and asked to put in a dollar. Being the generous soul I am, I donated a quarter to the cause. In thanks he gave me the dollar! Confused and baffled by the monitarily unsound thanks I attempted to relax on the bus by opening a window.

Oakville air is somehow cleaner than Mississauga air. It took little time for the 48 to show up and I got on. I decided on a whim to visit Christina because she was on the way and i was too tired at the moment to ride my bike back from Meadowvale Town Centre. Once there, I drank her bottle of water of approximately 750mL and hung around with her until we decided to go to 7-eleven. I was still too disgusted by that massive Sobey's sandwich so I didn't buy anything while Christina got a small slurpee.

We then got on the 48 (my third time today) and went to meadowvale. This is because she had been in her hous all day and wanted to go somewhere. Arriving at the station, I got my bicycle and was allowed to put it on the bus. Getting the thing out proved a challenge and we were back at my place.

After that, we hung out some more and I got my birth certificate from my dad. Attempt number two is on Wednesday.

So close! [27 Aug 2005|10:13pm]

Unfortunatly, the 24 hours of Dungeons and Dragons did not happen. My grandmother wanted them to leave because she wanted to go to sleep. We were all okay with that, our nerdy desires will wait until tomorrow.

The good news was that I got to use my old cleric named Jesus. How wonderful! Tomorrow will be the last day of D&D. After that, I will rejoin the ranks of society.

The agenda [26 Aug 2005|01:24pm]
[ mood | Overwhelmed ]

My final week before I leave has been completely scheduled to maximize fun and potential stress. In 9 days at this time, I will be sitting in my dorm settling in.

Here is my amazing schedule:
Today - Hang out with my lovely girlfriend
Saturday - Dungeons and Dragons, a truely manly game
Sunday - Same as above
Monday - The movie. (A drinking game with hot peppers...how fun :D)
Tuesday - g1 Test (Yes, I'm behind)
Wednesday - Preparation for Thursday
Thursday - Barbeque (I apologize if I didn't ask you to come but I have limited spaces)
Friday - Some sort of adventure orchestrated by the multi-talented Sam.
Saturday - Packing (Its a bit last minute but it lets me maximize the rest of the week.)

And then I'm gone! wow. This summer has been very eventful. So much has happened so far.
